Finding the Right Care Home

Choosing a care home for yourself or a loved one is one of the most important decisions you can make. This guide explains the types of care available and how to find the right home.

Types of Care Available

Residential Care

Residential care homes provide accommodation, meals, and personal care (help with washing, dressing, and medication) for people who can no longer manage living independently. They do not provide nursing care.

Best for: People who need help with daily living tasks but don’t require regular nursing attention.

Nursing Care

Nursing care homes provide the same services as residential homes, but with the addition of 24-hour nursing care from qualified nurses. They are suitable for people with more complex medical needs.

Best for: People with significant medical needs requiring regular nursing attention.

Dementia Care

Dementia care homes are specially designed and staffed to support people living with dementia. They provide a safe, supportive environment with staff trained in dementia care.

Best for: People living with Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia who need specialist support.

Home Care

Home care allows people to receive care and support in their own home. This can range from a few hours of help per week to 24-hour live-in care.

Best for: People who want to stay in their own home but need some support with daily living.

How to Choose a Care Home

1. Assess Your Needs

Consider the type of care needed now and in the future. A care needs assessment from your local authority can help determine what level of care is required.

2. Consider Location

Think about proximity to family and friends, local amenities, and whether the person wants to stay in their familiar area.

3. Visit and Evaluate

Always visit care homes before making a decision. Look for:

  • ✅ Clean, comfortable, and well-maintained facilities
  • ✅ Friendly, trained, and attentive staff
  • ✅ A warm, respectful atmosphere
  • ✅ Activities and social engagement
  • ✅ Good food and nutrition
  • ✅ Personalised care plans
  • ✅ Clear fee structure

4. Understand the Costs

Care home costs vary significantly by region and care type:

Care TypeAverage Weekly Cost (UK)
Residential care£600 — £900
Nursing care£800 — £1,200
Dementia care£800 — £1,300

Costs vary widely by region. London and the South East tend to be more expensive.

How Is Care Funded?

Self-Funding

If you have savings or assets above a certain threshold (£23,250 in England in 2024/25), you’ll likely need to self-fund your care. Some local authorities provide support if your assets fall below this level.

Local Authority Funding

If your assets are below the threshold, your local authority may help fund your care. This is means-tested and depends on your financial situation and care needs.

NHS Continuing Healthcare

For people with complex, ongoing health needs, NHS Continuing Healthcare may cover the full cost of care. This is not means-tested and is based on health needs alone.
